Blade wanted to sleep, but he couldn’t. Not until he found out where the Palmers were. After he’d visited Nicole’s dad’s house, he’d been to Aiden Palmer’s, but he wasn’t there either. Frankie was busy trying to find an address for Nicole’s uncle, who was apparently some retired old gangster who’d been implicated in a raid at a cash depot in the eighties but had managed to evade arrest. Charlie Briggs wasn’t listed on the voter’s register anywhere, and he didn’t appear to own a property.

‘I can’t do this with you watching over my shoulder.’ Frankie stopped typing on his laptop and glared at Blade, who was staring at the screen, munching on a sandwich.

Blade was about to tell him to hurry up about it when his phone signalled an alert on the surveillance camera app. He put the sandwich down on a plate and pulled his phone from his pocket, opened up the app and clicked on the latest link.

On screen, he watched a woman enter the frame in Nicole’s kitchen and look around with another guy following behind.

Police, they had to be.

He tapped the volume marker to switch it to audible and listened to their conversation, watching with growing anger as they searched the house, calling for Nicole.

‘Shit.’ Blade clenched his fists. ‘The police know something, and they’re looking for Nicole too. Whatever you’re doing, do it faster. We need to find her before they do.’
